Cheminee Raum, Gasthof Hirschen, Kirchdorf

Mongolia, by Anita Fahrni

Since 1998, when Anita

Fahrni first heard about the

desperate state of Mongolian

education following the collapse

of the Soviet Union, she has

collected and sent over 215,000

books, in English or German,

to schools and universities there.

As well as sending these materials, Anita often travels to Mongolia, sometimes taking Swiss politicians with her, and is active in bringing Mongolian teachers to Switzerland for additional training, as well as sending teachers to Mongolia, for varying periods, to teach German or English.

Using slides, Anita, a Kantonsrätin in Thurgau, will give us an insight into the country and the challenges it faces today.

BOOKS: If you have any children’s or technical books, or novels, National Geographic magazines, etc, in German or English, which you could pass on, in good condition and less than ca. 10 years old, please bring them with you on the night and Anita will add them to her next container, going over in spring 2009. This way you can help a country build up its standard of living and improve its chances of determining its own future.

Note: There will be a charge of Fr10 for non-members attending this event.
